Is an Outdoor Cat Fence Right for Your Cat?

✅ Works Best For Cats Who:

  • Tolerate wearing a collar comfortably
  • Are food-motivated or reward-motivated
  • Aren't in constant panic-mode outdoors
  • Can learn through positive reinforcement

❌ Might Not Be a Fit If:

  • Your cat cannot safely wear any collar (medical/behavioral)
  • Your cat is extremely determined to escape no matter what
  • You want "zero supervision, instantly, from day one"
  • Your cat has severe anxiety outdoors

Three Ways to Use a Cat Fence

Whether you want to give your cat outdoor freedom, protect your garden, or create cat-free zones inside your home, we can help.

Outdoor Containment

Keep your cat safely within your yard without roaming the neighbourhood.

  • Protect from traffic and busy roads
  • Keep safe from predators (coyotes, foxes)
  • Prevent complaints from neighbours
  • Reduce risk of getting lost

Outdoor Exclusion Zones

Keep your cat out of specific outdoor areas while allowing yard access.

  • Protect gardens and flower beds
  • Keep cats away from pool areas
  • Safeguard fragile landscaping
  • Block access to neighbour's property

Indoor "Avoid Zones"

Create cat-free zones inside your home without closing doors.

  • Kitchen counters and food prep areas
  • Baby nursery doorway
  • Home office or craft room
  • Basement stairs or utility areas

How It Works

Our system uses a buried boundary wire that creates a signal field. When your cat approaches the boundary, their collar gives a warning tone first, then a gentle correction if they continue.

1

Boundary Wire

Wire is installed around your containment area (or around exclusion zones).

2

Transmitter

Creates a signal field that the collar can detect near the wire.

3

Receiver Collar

Gives a warning tone first, then a mild correction if your cat continues forward.

4

Training Flags

Visual markers help your cat learn where the boundary is during training.

The goal is that most cats learn to respond to the warning tone and rarely (or never) need correction after training.

Safety & Comfort

We know this is your biggest concern. Here's how we keep your cat safe and comfortable.

Is it painful?

The static correction is a brief, attention-getting sensation—similar to the static you might feel touching a doorknob in winter. It's designed to startle and redirect, not to hurt. Many cats only need to feel it once or twice before they respect the boundary.

Can I control the levels?

Yes. We have adjustable training levels and always start at the lowest effective setting. With our Link app-enabled collars, you can adjust the GentleSteps level yourself within the range we've unlocked for your cat.

What about collar irritation?

We recommend removing the collar daily (including at night) to let your cat's skin breathe. This prevents any irritation or pressure sores. Most cats adapt quickly to wearing the collar during outdoor time.

GentleSteps™ Training

Our training method focuses on confidence-building and positive reinforcement—not fear. We teach your cat to retreat calmly when they hear the warning, rewarding them for making the right choice.

Feel it for yourself: During installation, we invite you to hold the collar and feel exactly what your cat experiences. Total transparency.

Training: What We Do vs. What You Do

Training is a partnership. We set everything up and teach you the method; you do the daily practice. Cats can often take longer to train than dogs, so don't rush the process.

What's Included

  • Training orientation on install day (hands-on walkthrough + demo)
  • GentleSteps training plan (often about 10 days for cats)
  • Unlimited phone/email support for questions and adjustments
  • One free revisit within 30 days if you want another demo or need help

Your Training Plan

  • Days 1–3: Collar on, getting your cat comfortable with just wearing the collar
  • Days 4–6: Gently introducing them outside while tied up to a long lead
  • Days 7–9: Allowing them to approach the line, slowly turning up the correction
  • Around day 10: Ready for a final test

Common Training Mistakes to Avoid

  • Letting the cat roam unsupervised too early
  • Removing boundary flags too soon
  • Inconsistent reward timing
  • "Testing the boundary" repeatedly during training

Professional Installation

We handle all the technical work. Here's what makes our installation different from DIY kits.

📏

Proper Burial Depth

Wire buried ~4 inches deep (up to ~6 inches in wet/sandy areas). Depth varies slightly in rocky sections.

🚗

Driveway Crossings

Gravel, asphalt, or concrete—we handle it properly using cuts, seams, or burial as needed.

🔒

Protected Connections

All wire connections are sealed with silicone-filled connectors to prevent moisture damage.

📡

Cable Locating

We use a cable locator to trace and avoid cutting buried cable, fiber, or utility lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fit & Suitability

The system works best for ground-level boundaries. If your cat is primarily a fence-climber, they may still be able to get out by climbing trees or structures near the boundary. We'll discuss your cat's habits during the quote process.
Many cats who resist regular collars adapt well to our receiver collar after a short adjustment period. The key is that they associate it with outdoor time, which most cats love. If your cat truly cannot tolerate any collar, this system may not be the right fit.
Yes—many clients use the system to rein in a cat who's already used to going outside but has started roaming too far. Training takes a bit longer since you're changing an existing habit, but it absolutely works.

Safety & Training

The correction is a brief static sensation—similar to touching a doorknob after walking on carpet. It's designed to startle and redirect, not cause pain. We always start at the lowest effective level and adjust only as needed.
With proper GentleSteps training, cats learn to confidently enjoy their yard while respecting the boundary. The key is gradual introduction with positive reinforcement—not flooding them with corrections. We teach you exactly how to do this.
Most cats start to understand the boundary within the first few days, but we recommend following the full GentleSteps plan (often about 10 days for cats) before you consider training complete. Some cats may need a bit longer. We're available by phone/email throughout the process to troubleshoot.
Contact us immediately. We can adjust settings, remove the half-second delay, or increase levels as needed. One breakthrough doesn't mean failure—it means we need to fine-tune.
No—the collar must be on whenever your cat is in the containment area. Without it, there's no warning and no boundary. We recommend removing it daily (at night or when indoors) to prevent skin irritation.

Practical Operation

Yes. Simply remove the collar before putting your cat in a carrier. Without the collar, they won't receive any warning or correction.
The transmitter requires power to create the signal field. Battery backup is available (~8–24 hours depending on conditions). During extended outages, keep your cat inside or supervise outdoor time.
Yes. The system works in all weather conditions. Snow, rain, and cold don't affect the buried wire or transmitter signal.
Yes! Indoor units can create invisible barriers around counters, doorways, or specific rooms. Many cat households use this feature even without an outdoor system.

Expectations & Limitations

No. The system only works with pets wearing the receiver collar. It won't prevent neighbourhood cats, wildlife, or other animals from entering your property.
No. It's a training-based system. The boundary only works because your cat has learned to respect it. A properly trained cat will stop before the boundary—but there's no physical barrier preventing them from crossing if they choose to ignore the warning.
Not quite. You'll need to keep the collar charged, check fit regularly, and do occasional "refresher" training if your cat tests the boundary. Most owners spend just a few minutes per week on maintenance once training is complete.
If the gate isn't protected by buried wire, it's an open exit. The system only creates boundaries where wire is installed. We can install wire across gate openings if needed.
